Electro-Motive Diesel, Inc (EMD), based in La Grange, Illinois , USA, is a world leader in manufacturing medium speed diesel engines for use in locomotives, stationary and marine generator sets, and marine mechanical applications. Established in 1922, EMD has designed and manufactured over 70,000 medium speed diesel engines with over 8500 of those delivered into the Power, Marine, and Industrial markets since 1968.
EMD utilizes a highly skilled Distributor Network to design and package, install, and service our engines in Power Products applications worldwide. Distributor responsibilities include the design and integration of control systems, cooling systems, generator integration and may include shafting and gearing in marine applications. These responsibilities are completed with the assistance and consultation of EMD’s performance and application engineers.
Product Description
Electro-Motive Diesel, Inc. produces the 2-cycle 710 series engine, which is the most responsive medium speed engine built today. The 45 degree engine is available in 8, 12, 16, and 20 cylinder configurations with continuous power ratings ranging from 2000 to 5000 horsepower @ 900 RPM. By firing each cylinder once per revolution, the 710 series of engine can accept full load smoothly and rapidly at any engine speed. In generator applications the engines are able to go from zero to full load in as little as two seconds, while in mechanical marine applications our engines regularly demonstrate idle to full load responsiveness in 11 seconds or less!
EMD’s customers have found this to be extremely important in Dynamic Positioning as well as other demanding variable high load applications such as anchor handling, dredge operation, escort tugs, and river boat navigation. Our electronically controlled engines provide precise control and allow for refined tuning and complete feedback of engine parameters to customer control and monitoring systems.
EMD’s engines are famous for ruggedness, durability, and ease of maintenance. Today’s 710-G-T2 series of engines are United States EPA T2 certified and surpass IMO Annex VI Tier 2 emissions limits. Our engines are certified by ABS, DNV, BV, Lloyds and KR and are supported by a worldwide Distributor and Service Center organization to provide spares and expertly trained mechanics around the world from our on site training facility.
